We extend warm greetings to our new incumbent, the Reverend Patrick McManus, and his family. As we welcome them into our community, here’s something to help get to know them better.
PATRICK and RENEE
What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on?
Patrick: We took a trip to the East Coast a few years ago during the last days of spring. We spent time in PEI, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. Great trip!
Renée: Patrick and I went to London, England 6 years ago. It was my first time overseas and I really want to go back with the kids in the future.
What are some of your favourite foods?
Patrick: I like to eat simple and fresh foods. Anything straight out of the garden is a favourite. If I’m in a nice restaurant I’ll usually order fish or a pasta dish. In the morning, I’ll have plain yogurt with homemade granola and French press coffee.
Renée: I love a great salad, sautéed greens with roast chicken and baked potatoes. I like simple, organic, whole foods and love to shop at local farmers markets. Maple syrup, goat cheese, berries, smoked fish, and honey crisp apples are favourites. Green tea or dandelion root tea in the morning and kombucha is a great treat. I can’t eat gluten and I have several other food restrictions but I try to focus on what I can eat.
What are you looking forward to about your move to Toronto?
Patrick: I’m looking forward to meeting new people, new challenges, and particularly getting to know the neighbourhood around ASK. I’m also really looking forward to new running routes, especially along the Humber river.
Renée: So many things! I’m looking forward to growing as an artist and connecting with the art community in the city. I’m also excited for all the new food and restaurant options. I’m looking forward to connecting with old friend and making new ones!
What are you regretting about your move away from Sault Ste. Marie?
Patrick: I’m going to miss the many great friends we’ve made in Sault Ste. Marie. I’m also going to miss the geography of this part of Northern Ontario. It’s a beautiful part of the province.
Renée: I will miss the really great friends we have made during our time there. Future visits have already been planned! I will also miss how beautiful Lake Superior is but am hoping to find some equally inspiring places in Toronto!
What is your favourite memory of the people at Emmaus Anglican?
Patrick: As a pastor, your heart is so full of memories and people that it’s hard to pick just one; it’s like picking a favourite child! Being with so many people through good days and bad ones is a great blessing to me as a priest.
Renée: A favourite memory is the day we built the community garden on the church property. It was amazing to see so many people come together and do that all in one day!
What bible verse informs your prayer life?
Patrick: Romans 8:38-39.
Renée: The Psalms, especially Psalm 121, the book of Esther, the Gospels and the book of James are only some of my go-to scriptures!
Best hymn ever?
Patrick: “All Creatures of Our God and King”, especially Mr. Bean’s version. Classic!
Renée: “Joyful, Joyful”, it was sung at our wedding and it always seems to play in church around our anniversary, which is very close to Mother’s Day.
